Scaling Web3: Polygon (MATIC)

presentational

Without a doubt, web3 will be here sooner than we know it. The web3 community is growing at an exponential rate, and a lot if it has to do with projects which are specifically aimed at scaling these innovations on the Ethereum network. Although there are a number of scaling solutions across multiple smart contract enabled development platforms, both Harmony and Polygon are truly showing the world what it means to take leadership in the technological renaissance that is web3. In this piece we will take a close look at Polygon!

Polygon

Polygon is a secure, decentralized Ethereum scaling platform which enables developers to build scalable, user-friendly dApps, with low transaction fees, right on the Ethereum network! Polygon is represented by the MATIC token, which is traded on nearly every exchange and as many of you probably know, is one of the first coins we placed on the Killer Whale suggested coin list. Polygon combines the best parts of the Ethereum network with other sovereign blockchains. The result is a full-fledged multi-chain system that brings new levels of innovation to Ethereum’s network effects.

Polygon consists of multiple sidechains that run alongside the Ethereum blockchain:

  • Polygon PoS - Polygon PoS is an EVM compatible sidechain which is secured by a permissionless set of PoS validators.

  • Polygon Hermez - Polygon Hermez is an open source Zero Knowledge “ZK”-rollup that is optimized for low cost and secure token transfers within the Ethereum network.

  • Polygon Avail - Polygon Avail is a general purpose blockchain that is focused on data availability. Polygon Avail targets standalone chains for off chain scaling solutions.

  • Polygon Edge - Polygon Edge is a modular and extendable framework for building both private and public blockchains which are compatible with the Ethereum network.

  • Polygon Nightfall - Polygon Nightfall is a scaling solution that uses optimistic roll-ups alongside Zero Knowledge cryptography

  • Polygon Miden - Polygon Miden is a STARK based zero knowledge rollup that offers support for arbitrary smart contracts

  • Polygon Zero - Polygon Zero is a highly scalable zero knowledge rollup, which uses a recursive proof system that is Ethereum compatible.

Conclusion

We had the luxury of meeting with several members of the Polygon team during ETHDenver last month to discuss some of the things Polygon is doing to contribute to web3 development. Polygon is putting an incredible amount of initiative into the web3 space by sponsoring DAOs and perpetually creating new tools for developers to use in their work. Projects like Polygon are undoubtably the strongest driving force behind the next generation of the internet!
